Flying After a Rhinoplasty

Flying After a Rhinoplasty

Posted by Dr. Litner and Dr. Solieman on July 23rd, 2015

Although rhinoplasty is one of the most sought after cosmetic surgeries, it also is one of the most challenging procedures to master. A rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, demands a practiced hand, a keen eye and an ability to listen to a patient’s aesthetic and functional concerns related to the nose.

Because rhinoplasty requires such skill and individual attention, geography should not limit a patient’s choice of facial plastic surgeons. Today, many rhinoplasty candidates are seeking the best care possible–even if it means traveling away from home. So what does a long-distance trip mean for your recovery? If you plan to fly after a nose surgery, you should take some time to recuperate before boarding the plane.

In general, Drs. Litner and Solieman of Profiles Beverly Hills recommend that out-of-town patients plan to stay in the Los Angeles area for at least 6-7 days after surgery. During the initial days of recovery, Drs. Litner and Solieman’s goal is to make sure that you are healing as expected and that, although exceedingly rare, there are no immediate complications that require care.

Another reason to rest up a bit before flying is pressure change. After a rhinoplasty, you will experience some mild bruising, swelling and a feeling of “stuffiness,” which typically improve in the first few days post-surgery. When swelling and congestion are at their greatest, changes in cabin air pressure can exacerbate discomfort. (If you have ever flown with a cold or sinus infection, you know those painful takeoffs and landings.)

When you do fly, stay hydrated and use a nasal spray to ease congestion. In addition, keep your circulation going. Stretch your legs and take a walk up and down the aisle every 30-60 minutes to help reduce the chance of blood clots.

Every rhinoplasty is unique to the patient, so it is extremely important to discuss your schedule and travel plans prior to your surgery. At Profiles Beverly Hills, we understand the special requirements for the out-of-town patient. Before, during and after surgery, our team is dedicated to making your rhinoplasty experience both exceptional and smooth. We can recommend local accommodations and services to make your stay in LA a pleasant one.
