Rediscover Smooth, Even Skin Tone

We have been able to help many of our Beverly Hills patients get melasma under control. Whenever we treat melasma, we first discuss the importance of preventing further spots from appearing as well as preventing existing melasma from getting darker. We’ll work with you to identify triggers and recommend strategies for avoiding them. We will then discuss a combination of our proprietary skin care combination and laser treatments to then gradually and effectively make the melasma improve. Our team of doctors and nurses understand that melasma is difficult and that you have likely been disappointed by promises in the past; however, we also know that with the right process and treatments a very beautiful result is possible.

Using fractional non-ablative laser technology, we can treat large areas of the face to fade brown spots and restore even pigmentation. We can also use the laser to spot treat problem areas without treating the entire face.

“These guys are the best in the business. When I was finally ready to go under the knife, these were the guys I called. The consultation is very thorough. They take their time & answered any question I had. They want YOU to be happy. It’s been a few years & I love the way things have settled. I refer them people all the time. It’s absolutely worth the money.”

Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition that is characterized by the presence of blotchy brown spots across the face. While melasma poses no health risk, it can cause considerable embarrassment, leading many people to seek help with treating the condition. Melasma is highly treatable. Small lifestyle changes can lead to major improvements and laser treatment can be used to quickly and effectively fade brown spots.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MELASMA

Melasma appears in large brown patches with irregular borders, accompanied by smaller brown spots that can look like freckles. Melasma is usually found on both sides of the face in symmetrical patterns. It tends to appear most often on the following areas of the face:

  • Forehead
  • Bridge of the nose
  • Cheeks
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Jawline

CAUSES, TRIGGERS, AND PREVENTION

Melasma is caused by an overproduction of melanin in the skin. Research indicates that individuals with melasma have much more efficient melanocytes (pigment cells). Certain triggers are known to trigger or worsen melasma. These include:

  • Sun exposure – lifelong exposure can trigger melasma and worsen the condition in affected individuals.
  • Pregnancy – also referred to as “the mask of pregnancy,” pregnancy-induced melasma tends to fade a few months after the baby’s delivery.
  • Hormone treatments – for example, birth control and hormone replacement therapy.
  • Skincare products and cosmetics – harsh skin products and over-exfoliation can worsen melasma.

By understanding these triggers, you may be able to improve melasma or prevent it from worsening. Better sun protection is the most important step you can take in improving melasma. It’s not easy to avoid the sun in Los Angeles, but by wearing sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat while outdoors, your brown spots may start to fade naturally. If you have noticed that birth control pills or other hormonal therapies are worsening melasma, speak to your doctor to find out if another medication would be more suitable

WHO IS AT RISK FOR DEVELOPING MELASMA?

While anyone can develop melasma at any point in their lives, the condition is most often seen in women with brown skin between the ages 20 and 40. There is also a strong genetic link. If you have a close family member with melasma, your risk of developing the condition increases by 30%.
