Non-Surgical vs Surgical Browlift

Written by Dr. Litner and Dr. Solieman | September 30th, 2015

Would you like to smooth the lines in your forehead and reduce sagginess in the eyebrow area, but are confused about which cosmetic procedure is appropriate for you? From injectables to surgery, there are more options than ever that can address your aesthetic concerns.

What is a brow lift?

In general terms, a brow lift is any rejuvenating procedure that can give the brow area a softer appeal. After a brow lift, the upper face will look more relaxed and alert. A brow lift can:

  • Diminish vertical creases between eyebrows (frown lines)
  • Lift droopy eyebrows
  • Reduce hooding in the eyelids

What is the difference between a non-surgical browlift and a surgical brow lift?

Both surgical and non-surgical brow lifts can be highly effective in reducing visible signs of aging. However, each approach has their benefits and limitations and can yield different results.

A non-surgical brow lift refers to minimally invasive injectable procedures, such as neurotoxins (Botox) and dermal fillers (Restylane, for example). Requiring no incisions and little to no recovery time, these cosmetic therapies are administered with a fine needle and are excellent for erasing lines and creases. While non surgical techniques are painless and highly popular, they offer temporary solutions and cannot address severe hooding in the brows. Non surgical brow lifts need touch up treatments about every 6 months, depending on the individual.

A surgical brow lift is a more involved procedure–often performed with an endoscope–that manipulates the underlying tissues to elevate and tighten the brow area. Post-procedure, the patient will experience some swelling and bruising as they recuperate. Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to their normal activities within a week to ten days. While a surgery is a greater one-time commitment than minimally invasive techniques, the results can last for years. If you have extensive lines, creases, or sagging or if injectable treatments are no longer effectively addressing your needs, a surgical brow lift may be the better treatment for you.

Which brow lift procedure is best for you?

The decision to undergo a cosmetic procedure is a highly personal one. When evaluating the skin for a brow lift, Drs. Litner and Solieman consider the following factors:

  • How lax is your skin?
  • Are your eyelids interfering with your vision?
  • Is a temporary solution sufficient or would you benefit from a longer-lasting solution?
  • What type of recovery period is acceptable given your lifestyle?
  • What is your history with cosmetic procedures?
  • If surgery is the best option, are you in general good health?

If your skin has lost too much elasticity, Dr. Litner and Dr. Solieman will recommend a surgical brow lift.
