Hispanic Rhinoplasty

Historically, Hispanic rhinoplasty in the English literature has been equated with the so called “Mestizo nose”.  First described by Fernando Ortiz- Monastero in the late 1970s, the term Mestizo was initially coined to describe the intermixing of the indigenous South and Central American Indian populations with the Spanish Conquistadors in the 15th and 16th Centuries. Since then, with the introduction of more ethnic variations from intermixing of this Mestizo group with further waves of European immigrants, the race has come to be characterized by a mixture and intermingling of all these diverse characteristics with few dominant or persistent patterns.

As would be expected with any population, the studies have found that there is a continuum of nasal features in the Hispanic population, rather than distinct types.  As with the African American nose, rather than try to categorize various subpopulations, in trying to educate our patient population, Drs. Solieman and Litner focus on those characteristics that tend to differentiate the Hispanic nose from the Caucasian nose.

In general, Hispanic facial characteristics can be differentiated from the Caucasian in the following ways:

  1. Broad faces, commonly with prominent cheek bones and a relatively small nose
  2. A slightly small chin
  3. A small nasal hump
  4. Wider nostrils
  5. Wider and lower nasal bridge
  6. Moderately thick, sebaceous skin
When present, Drs. Litner and Solieman take these differences in anatomic and structural components into consideration in planning your surgery and in explaining to you, our patient, what can be accomplished with your surgery.
